Our favorite droid gets a gadget makeover again. Big surprise. When is he ever going to get some respect? If he isn’t pulling aquarium duty, he’s showing up as cufflinks.
Well, now someone’s taken a Lego R2 and made him into a USB drive. Which is neat and all, but he still ain’t gettin no respect. Because when you plug the little guy into your usb port, he just looks like he got shot out of a cannon and got stuck in your laptop and should be flailing his legs. Such is the life of an overly merchandised droid. 4GB for $49.95.

One thing about R2-D2’s design that Lucas never anticipated was that it would provide so much versatility when decapitated. From ice buckets, to R2 speakers, this little droid loses his head all the time. So much so, I’m surprised he hasn’t been featured in a Highlander movie. C-3PO is the prissy effeminate one and he hasn’t had so much bad treatment.
Now headless R2 will serve you up some cold drinks as a USB cooler. It goes on sale August 8. All I know for sure is that somewhere there is a huge warehouse full of R2-D2 scalps. Some nerd will likely wander in one day and have a nervous breakdown at the horrible sight.

It wasn’t all that long ago that I was bitching about the complete lack of robot USB drives. Now we are getting more then we can handle. Philips has regaled us with its Active Crystal collection for awhile. This time around it’s got Swarovski crystals into the 2008 range. The 2GB Robot Naughty Raymond, in black, is already available, and to give him some companionship, here comes the USB Happy Laura. It’s set in white with sparkling crystals for the body and features for the face. The cute girlly bot even has ruby lips! Happy Laura has a 2GB capacity and will be available in Europe for 150€ or $238.

Team is doing something about the almost complete lack of robot flash drives, with their “T-Bot R50″ robot-shaped flash drives that were shown off at the Computex event. Looks like they’ll come in 1GB,2GB,4GB and 8GB sizes. You can choose between red, white, blue or black. They have a cool retro look.

All I can say is, it’s about time. The detail is really nice on this little droid. And it does more then just sit there. R2’s head moves every 3 minutes and lights up, plus it has some cool sound effects. There’s also a Darth Vader model, but R2 is the one we want. Unfortunately, they’re only in Japan for now.

I don’t know if you noticed, but there are not a ton of Robot USB drive options available. That’s why I’ll be picking up one of these. This little guy is a 256MB drive and includes a clasp to attach to your keychain. He could have more memory, but who cares. He’ll cost you $28.50.
