Flying Duck Hunter Robot

January 7th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

This game looks familiar. Except now you can really score a kill. Well, not really. But it’s as close as some of you will ever get to killing a flying duck. Available this spring, the Duck Hunter is like a WowWee Dragonfly mashed up with the classic Duck Hunt lightgun shooting game.

The duck launches from your IR blaster, charging in just 10 seconds from a few AA batteries in the pistol. When the robotic duck takes flight autonomously, just shoot the bird three times. Robot duck death will follow.

A base version of the Duck Hunter will cost $30 while a premium version that includes a controller so one person can actually fly the duck while another shoots will cost $40.

WowWee Spyball Spy Camera

January 7th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

Like the Rovio, the WowWee Spyball spy camera will let you live out some James Bond fantasies. Or at the very least snap some upskirt pics. The tiny remote controlled robotic ball features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and gets around on sleek wheels, capable of smooth mobility and quick 360-degree turns.

It can also transform from a ball to a camera and back within seconds, and it does it’s job quietly, so you can sneak around and get some dirt on people. The blackmail will follow. Another cool feature is that when it’s connected to a home network, the Spyball can be controlled remotely via the Internet.

I love it’s menacing death star type look. It looks like it has just spotted you and is about to take you out with a laser.

WowWee Joebot dances, while Roborover is a shy geek

January 7th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

As always, WowWee has some new robots up it’s sleeve at this year’s CES. They look interesting as ever and we can’t wait to play with them. What I like about their robots is that they actually infuse them with some personality.

In this case, Joebot is the large guy. A dancing rhythm robot that responds to beats. He’s the life of the party. The Roborover explorer on the other hand, starts out shy and gets bolder over time. I love the design on these guys. Full press release below.

Asimo & Friend Run A Cafe Together

January 6th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

Last week Universal City Walk Osaka, Japan conducted experiments with Honda’s robot ‘Asimo’ and Robovie-II. A cafeteria was setup and the robot duo took charge of everything from inviting the guests, serving them and even waving goodbye.

Rumor is that they found the whole joint venture tough, got into debt running the place and it all just went to hell. So they’re considering contacting Gordon Ramsey and appearing on Kitchen Nightmares in hopes of making it work. Two more videos below.

Rice Planting RiceBot Farms Fields, Wins Prize

January 5th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

A rice planting robot developed by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization in Japan is the grand prize winner of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry 2008 Robot Awards. The ricebot is the first of it’s kind to be completely automated, through the use of GPS and gyros that figure out its position in the field and keep the rice planting all orderly.

They say that production is about 10 years away, but I’m thinking it will happen much sooner. Everything is automatic aside from the driving of the machines, a job still safely in human hands.

iRobot To Introduce Mystery Product At CES

January 5th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

iRobot CEO Colin Angle told the Boston Globe’s Hiawatha Bray that the company will introduce a new product at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This, despite spending less on the show then in previous years.

Anybody have a guess? It has to be better than the Looj! Could be a lawn mower. Hopefully it’s something interesting and not another Roomba.

Flight Of The Conchords: The Humans Are Dead

January 5th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

For the first 30 seconds or so I was tempted to stop watching. Don’t. This is a funny take on our eventual enslavement and death at the hands of our metal overlords.(Two dorks singing about the future)

Miniature Cylon LED Kit

January 5th, 2009 by Conner Flynn

Here’s a DIY electronic kit that lets you live out your Cylon Battlestar Galactica fantasies in a small scale. Dale Wheat’s tinyCylon circuit is a tiny version of the chasing red LEDs that are a Cylons eye. See, before they were skinjobs, Cylons were metal badasses with a roving red eye.

The programmable ATtiny13 controller chip is the brain, and is loaded with a bunch of patterns. You can toggle between a bunch of mini light shows: classic Cylon bi-directional scan, left-to-right, right-to-left, glowing eyes, a couple of random modes, cyclops, and off. Only $10.
