We would all like to have our own robot. And hey, it’s a bonus if that robot doubles as a cool CNC router. We’ll here’s your opportunity to build your own six legged robot with an attached CNC router for a head. Check out this awesome demo video that shows off the robots mobility while it carves a super detailed 3d human face.
I think this solves the mystery of that huge face on Mars. Somewhere out there, some alien is controlling a gigantic robo-router for their own amusement. The awesome thing is that you can build your own version. The site is selling kits with everything you need. Soon you too can make detailed human heads of your very own.
This is a video of an iPhone robot, complete with springy tail. It’s a self-propelled iPhone robot that uses a small electrical engine and a Arduino board. It runs on 4 AA batteries and apparently prefers to dance to the sounds of Techo.
Some guy really hates to dispose of disposable razors and spent about 800 hours cutting up 2,120 disposable razors and gluing them together to make a functional 43 pound robot. You crazy, razor-man. But your psycho project is retro-cool.
Wanna Nerd up your Halloween party? Here’s a great tutorial for making little robot “bugs” that dance around whenever they sense light. It’s enough to spook any robot fearing human. Flash a light on it and it freaks out. You could have it guard a bowl of candy.
Check out the pic above. It’s like when C-3PO got trashed in Cloud City. But it had to be done. No one wants the cheap version of Wall-E when they can have the Ultimate Wall-E. But it’s expensive, so this is the alternative. Trossen Robotics forum member DJ Sures added a bunch of extra servos and a new cpu with 1,000 new lines of code. Chaep Wall-E now has the ability to tilt his head and wave his arms and also autonomously navigate. Video below. Read the rest of this entry »
The craziest application built for Pownce yet? This my friends is a robot that pours beer when sent a Pownce message! It may be the best thing ever. All it takes is a quick post from your iPhone and the robot pours a nice cold beer. The Lego Mindstorms robot was created by Matt Reid for Barcamp Nashville. Sweet!
Here in the US we have DARPA’s Grand Challenge as one incentive for robotics engineers to push the limit of their craft (for military benefit), but across the pond the Brit’s have the Ministry of Defense hosting Grand Challenges as well. The MOD’s latest challenge sought the development of autonomous robots to safely detect things like IEDs, snipers, heavy weapons, enemy patrols, etc. Each of the ten participating teams were given one hour to compete in the event.
Team Stellar from Cranfield University won this competition with a robot exhibiting some pretty impressive visual tech. Radar and visible light sensors and a MIRICLE 110K thermal imaging camera helped the bot see.
Dr. Toby Breckon from Cranfield said, “”The competition has been tough, but we are delighted, both to have won, and to be one step further towards helping our troops stay safer and become better prepared to deal with potential threats encountered on overseas operations.” This sounds a lot like, “Our superior robots will be reclaiming our American colonies for the UK.” But whatev, they earned it. They also earned a trophy presented at the end of the three-day-long Grand Challenge.
So this guy wanted a way for his iPhone to come to him, in certain situations.(Apparently he’s on the toilet alot) He gets points for ingenuity, putting robot legs on an iPhone, but I think the concept needs some fine tuning. We really don’t want our iPhone to spring to life and hurl itself off the edge of the table as seen here.
We’ve seen some monstrosities in our day, but somehow putting the head of a Cabbage Patch Kid on top of a robot crab just raises the bar a bit. The robot is available in a DIY kit, minus the head of course and takes about three hours to put together. Slap on a doll head and it will creep out all the kids who come to you for candy. One day in the future all Cabbage Patch Kids will look like this. Video below. Read the rest of this entry »
Inspired by the famous ‘Murata Boy’ robot that rides a bicycle, some guys in Japan have created a cool cycling female character right out of anime. It beats Murata Boy in terms of sexiness. The video features one of the Murata Boy television commercials followed by a step-by-step documentary covering the construction of their robot clone. It’s not in English, but it’s fun.
