Build your own walking CNC robot router

November 13th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

We would all like to have our own robot. And hey, it’s a bonus if that robot doubles as a cool CNC router. We’ll here’s your opportunity to build your own six legged robot with an attached CNC router for a head. Check out this awesome demo video that shows off the robots mobility while it carves a super detailed 3d human face.

I think this solves the mystery of that huge face on Mars. Somewhere out there, some alien is controlling a gigantic robo-router for their own amusement. The awesome thing is that you can build your own version. The site is selling kits with everything you need. Soon you too can make detailed human heads of your very own.

iPhone Turned Into A Robot

November 5th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

This is a video of an iPhone robot, complete with springy tail. It’s a self-propelled iPhone robot that uses a small electrical engine and a Arduino board. It runs on 4 AA batteries and apparently prefers to dance to the sounds of Techo.

Bickford: The Disposable Razor Robot

October 30th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

Some guy really hates to dispose of disposable razors and spent about 800 hours cutting up 2,120 disposable razors and gluing them together to make a functional 43 pound robot. You crazy, razor-man. But your psycho project is retro-cool.

Modder Turns InterAction Wall-E Into Ultimate Wall-E

October 24th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

Check out the pic above. It’s like when C-3PO got trashed in Cloud City. But it had to be done. No one wants the cheap version of Wall-E when they can have the Ultimate Wall-E. But it’s expensive, so this is the alternative. Trossen Robotics forum member DJ Sures added a bunch of extra servos and a new cpu with 1,000 new lines of code. Chaep Wall-E now has the ability to tilt his head and wave his arms and also autonomously navigate. Video below.

WowWee Rovio Hacking: LED Headlights

October 22nd, 2008 by Conner Flynn

When WowWee’s Rovio was first announced we all knew it would be a popular platform for modders. The three-wheeled remote WiFi camera-bot has been available for a few weeks, and the first hacks are now coming in. Rudolph at RoboCommunity has taken it upon himself to add some LED lights to the webcam.

Rovio already has headlights which you can remotely switch on and off, but if you’re peering upward into the darkness then they’re less effective then if you are just looking at the floor. Rudolph’s hack fits two bright white LEDs to either side of the camera lens, wired in with the original lights so they can be switched on and off at command.

Walking iPhone Robot Commits Suicide, Needs Work

October 18th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

So this guy wanted a way for his iPhone to come to him, in certain situations.(Apparently he’s on the toilet alot) He gets points for ingenuity, putting robot legs on an iPhone, but I think the concept needs some fine tuning. We really don’t want our iPhone to spring to life and hurl itself off the edge of the table as seen here.

Just In Time For Halloween: Robotic Crab With A Cabbage Patch Head

October 8th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

We’ve seen some monstrosities in our day, but somehow putting the head of a Cabbage Patch Kid on top of a robot crab just raises the bar a bit. The robot is available in a DIY kit, minus the head of course and takes about three hours to put together. Slap on a doll head and it will creep out all the kids who come to you for candy. One day in the future all Cabbage Patch Kids will look like this. Video below.

Jeremy Mayer’s Typewriter Robots Are All Kinds Of Awesome

October 6th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

We’ve seen our share of robot sculptures, but Jeremy Mayer’s incredible typewriter robots are blowing our minds in a whole new way. He builds his detailed creations entirely from parts in old typewriters. The California artist takes apart old typewriters and then reassembles it all without glue, solder or welding, which is pretty impressive. Mayer expects to exhibit his works at La Jolla’s Device Gallery in the Summer of 2009.

Bar2D2 Beer Serving Droid

September 30th, 2008 by Conner Flynn

Everyone loves a beer carrying/serving droid, but Bar2D2 here looks like he spent a few decades in the attic of a Jawa Sandcrawler. It’s basically an automatic dispensing machine for beer bottles and cans etc. He has some mixing skills too apparently. He sports an electric chair bottom and can even make some small talk, thanks to its R2-D2 voice module. Which probably screams and beeps to be let out of that body.
