Medical technology has come a long way. Especially for those suffering with severe mobility issues. Wheelchairs of all kinds have been developed in the past, but this one is a bit different. It’s called the iBot by Dean Kamen, developed in partnership between DEKA and Johnson and Johnson’s Independence Technology.
What makes the iBOT unique is that it can walk up and down the stairs, through sand and traverse shallow water. Controlled by a remote control, it can be rolled over ramps and lifted into vehicles. The iBOT can fully erect to a height of about 6 feet and keeps it’s balance using software called iBALANCE that receives data using sensors and gyroscopes.
A Segway in a wheelchair. At the moment it isn’t cheap, the iBOT is priced at $26,100. Obviously cost will come down eventually and then it will be a great aid for those who need it.
