Ziggy Destroys A Washing Machine
June 23rd, 2009

No one messes with Ziggy the 340 pound destroyer. Other robots and even washing machines bow down before him. That’s because he easily tears them to shreds. Ziggy is a combat robot made by Canadian Mark Demers.

The bot trounced the competition this year to win the gold medal at this years RoboGames. Watch as he tears apart and beats the living hell out of this washing machine. He doesn’t just beat it up, but actually hurls it into the air a few times too.

Roomba Sumo Fight
May 26th, 2009

Robot sumo. Sumo wrestling with robots. Some of you may be familiar with it, some not. But I bet you haven’t seen robot sumo played with modified Roombas in formal competitions. Have you? This video is from the Tallinn 2009 Spring Cup robot sumo competition.

Kondo Bot Battles In Japan
May 11th, 2009

Kondo robots are a modular line of robots sold in Japan. The coolest thing you can do with your Kondo bot is enter him into a “Kondo Battle” where the bots fight until they fall over. Two bots enter, one bot leaves. It’s great fun and no bots are harmed really. Well, nothing his geek master can’t fix.

More below.

Robot “Fight Club”
February 23rd, 2009

The first rule of human “Fight Club” is “You don’t talk about Fight Club”. I can only assume that it’s the same with the robot version.

On Wednesday, February 11, at a secret underground location, a group of robot enthusiasts gathered to compete in one of the most exciting and hilariously funny, Robot “Fight Club” sessions to date. The fights loosely follow the Pro-Wrestling format used by humans.

I have to say these bots are getting pretty damn good at fighting. Their moves are getting wilder and better all the time.

Engine Sentai Go-onger: Utter Madness
February 5th, 2009

Last week we told you about a robot toy in Japan that was reportedly hurting children. What kind of masochists would choose to play with toys that inflict pain on their owners? I couldn’t figure out why somebody would subscribe to such suffering, but then today I saw a clip for the series the toys are based on, and now I know. This show is effing awesome.
The show is called Engine Sentai Go-onger, or Engine Squadron Go-onger in English. Basically this show is a mix of Power Rangers and Transformers. “The motif of this series is animals, the motor industry, and environmentalism.”
This clip shows the materialization of Engine Oh G12, which is a massive robot made of 12 vehicles. I don’t know how environmentalism plays a role when the protagonist is an energy guzzling conglomeration of petrol-burning automobiles, but I don’t care! I think it’s safe to say that Oh G12 could destroy Optimus Prime any day—G12 has robot car shoes and part of his body is an airplane. This show looks absolutely nuts. I wish I had this as a kid, instead I had to watch Antiques Roadshow and Charles in Charge. A simpler time!

Bot Fight: Data VS. R2-D2
October 21st, 2008

Welcome to Bot Fight. Two bots enter, one bot leaves. Usually with broken parts and a rectal violation with a wrench.

Size advantage: Clearly Data

Special abilities:

Data-Can dress up as Sherlock Holmes. Do comedy with Joe Piscopo. Have sex with Tasha Yar. Own a cat. Is a daddy’s boy, searches out his creator Dr. Noonien Soong. Geordi LaForge’s butt-buddy.

R2-Can magically beep and just as magically have Star Wars humans understand him. Pals around with a Gay homosexual robot known as “Goldenrod”. Ejects lightsabers from his dome. Has bragging rights with a “third leg”. Backseat drives X-Wings. Somehow magically dodges room-fulls of stormtropper lasers.

Face Off: Lock both in a room and before you know it Data has himself a new pet. R2 has an android master who can understand his every flippin beep. They refuse to fight and instead laugh about C3PO, Q and the Borg. R2 feeds Data’s cat when he’s on the Bridge. During his Holmes holodeck excursions, Data introduces a Victorian suited R2 as his short friend from Brussels “Mr Arthur Desquared”. Geordi gets all emo and pissed off, soon devises a way to send R2 back to his own universe. At the last minute Q arrives and tells a sad Data that it was all a gift from him, to illustrate some BS sentiment. Data is sad but reflective. Cue end credits and preview next weeks steaming pile.
