HERO the Robot was built in 1983. He was “programmable and tended bar at parties, just like R2-D2 in Star Wars!” Wendy, it’s creator, wrote a custom program that used sonar ranging “eyes” to steer around obstacles. She also had HERO-1 guard her home, answer the phone, and send IR signals to her VCR while speaking the commands.
