HEARBO (meaning the HEAR-ing roBOt) is pretty unique among robots. He has the ability to distinguish all kinds of sounds. Even voices and sound effects. HEARBO uses HARK technology and distinguishes sounds by localizing, separating and then actually recognizing them.
HEARBO was developed at Honda Research Institute in Japan. Think about the implications for service bots. You want service bots to recognize commands from you as well as know when the doorbell rings etc. HEARBO is blazing a new trail for robots that will hear and understand what they hear, as well as we do.
