Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. Going out into the yard and playing catch with your son is a big part of that, but Disney wants to replace dad in this scene, with a robot that can actually play catch with kids. Robotics experts at the Disney Research lab in Pittsburgh have created this humanoid robot that may one day replace dads everywhere.
The robot isn’t that great yet. It lobs the ball rather than throws it. When you throw it back, it can find, register, and catch it, thanks to a Kinect that it uses to track the trajectory of an object thrown directly at it.
Now it just needs to learn how to hit a ball and we will have a robot league in no time.
