Robots can do many things, but for the most part they still have trouble getting up the stairs. Well, Nao is doing well in that department now. It won’t be long before we can have a bot deliver us breakfast in bed. Researchers from the University of Freiburg’s Humanoid Robots Laboratory have shown that a Nao humanoid is capable of climbing spiral staircases.
A laser range scanner on the top of the robot’s head provides a global estimation of the bot’s position, and the humanoid uses a 3D model of the staircase to match up with the images it captures for each step. This system gives it a good enough picture on its geography to detect stair edges and make it to the top without much trouble.
Daleks everywhere are jealous as they always are when a bot climbs any stairs.
