Google wants to build and own everything. Their latest project involved robot cars. Their goal is “to help prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions by fundamentally changing car use”. We’re talking cars that can drive themselves.
Automated cars, manned by trained operators, drove from Mountain View campus to Google’s Santa Monica office and then on to Hollywood Boulevard. They took a jaunt down Lombard Street, crossed the Golden Gate bridge, rolled through the Pacific Coast Highway, etc. Presumably singing Johnny cash’s “I’ve been everywhere” song. The company’s self-driving cars have logged over 140,000 miles.
The cars use video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic and avoid collisions. They also use detailed maps to navigate the road. This is all thanks to Google’s data centers, which process the enormous amounts of information.
Google cars are still a ways off. You can’t buy one right now. But one day in the future Google may just transport you to and fro with very little work on your part.
