SILO6 Detects Landmines
September 21st, 2009
The SILO6 is the 2nd robot developed by CSIC, the previous was SILO4. The 6 in the name is for 6 legs, which makes it capable of moving faster than one with 4 legs. Since it’s an insect-type of leg configuration, it requires more torque and more power, so they experimented with a pseudo-mammalian leg configuration which would require a lot less torque. But in the end they went with an alternating tripod gait, which means that 3 feet are always touching the ground.
It also has a sensor head for detecting land mines and objects. When it detects a mine, it sends the exact location to a computer database using GPS, which is accurate to within 2cm.
