New Talon IV Engineer Bot
February 18th, 2009

New Talon IV Engineer BotQinetiQ has unveiled a new Talon robot, the Talon IV Engineer. The Talon is made by QinetiQ’s subsidiary Foster Miller.

The new Talon robot can lift up to 65 lbs with it’s gripper arm and extend it 7 ft. The new arm is also capable of righting the robot if it becomes overturned, which is super useful. The current Talon robot arm can only lift about 20 lbs and extend 5 ft, so it’s quite an upgrade. The new Talon also sports 200 degree shoulder rotation, where the current model has none.

Talon robots have been used heavily in Iraq to clear IEDs(improvised explosive devices). One upgrade that makes a whole lot of sense and makes the new models easier to use, is an Xbox-like controller.
