Nissan BR23C Robot Thinks It’s A Bee
September 29th, 2008
Nature is always the best model. And with that in mind, Nissan has applied the idea to the Biomimetric Car Robot Drive or BR23C. The robot car is modelled after Bee behavior in order to prevent car collisions and thereby eliminate accident casualties.
The BR23C adopts a bee’s way of seeing the world. The insects rely on a 300-degree field of vision to identify obstacles and avoid them. Likewise the robot, using a Laser Range Finder (LRF) uses a 180-degree radius vision to detect obstacles two meters away. The image is transmitted to a microprocessor, which directs the robot to change direction or speed up in order to avoid a collision.
There’s always the possibility that it could learn on it’s own and try to act out other bee behaviors, so thankfully it can’t fly or sting. Yet.
It actually has a sort of robot ghost look. Sort of a robo-reaper. This is what I imagine comes to collect the souls of dead robots. But that’s just me.
