Stellar Robot Saturn Rises Sans Rings
August 19th, 2008

Britain’s Ministry of Defense announced winners today for its Grand Challenge–the contest sought to highlight promising military robotics technologies.  The final phase of the contest involved finding potential enemy threats in a mock battlefield.  Saturn, the name of the winning entry, comprised of three robots, two aerial and one ground bot.  Saturn was created by Team Stellar, which is made up of a number of design firms as well as members from Cranfield University.

Saturn stands for Sensing & Autonomous Tactical Urban Reconnaissance Network, and Stellar’s entry won against six other contestants.  The robots of Saturn are equipped with thermal, visual, and radar sensors.  Another notable entry from the Grand Challenge was from Team Swarm.  Swarm had eight small autonomous helicopters that worked together to take multi-angle pictures of threats and targets.
It’s pretty clear now that WW2045 really will be a glorified episode of BattleBots.
