Army Looks For A Psychologically Inspired Object Recognition System

July 22nd, 2008 by Conner Flynn

But what the hell is a “psychologically inspired object recognition system”? It’s the idea of giving robots and other mechanical creatures the ability to see objects the way humans do and make judgments based on what they see. Basically, the military wants bots that have something similar to spatial memory, which would let them “mentally rotate objects in order to match the object to different representations.”

Yeah, this is probably not the smartest thing in the world to do. Listen, the smarter we make ‘em, the quicker I get a robot fist through my spleen just for running this here site. Though I recognize that it will come to pass one day, I’d like to avoid that for as long as possible.
